Love letter

Deaglan,

I wanted to write you a letter today to tell you some things that are on my mind. You were born sixteen months ago today and even though that's not a long time by most standards, I suddenly felt a sense of time slipping away from me. I can't remember when you weren't here.

When I was younger I used to dream about success. I thought that if I just found the right job - my dream job - I would be happy, someone to admire, liked, satisfied, purposeful, and contented. Happiness had been defined to me as what a person does for a living when they grow up. In fact happiness and success were interchangable in this delineation.

But Deaglan when you came into my life, purpose took on a new meaning. The landscape of my mind changed. You are the lense through which I see other children, other people, relationships, every situation, world issues. I really understand now why we have to clean up this earth, stop hating each other, work hard to love, do the right things, stop war and violence, feed the hungry, share our resources and practice kindness.

Happiness is so easy now.

  4. It's going to be pretty special when the day arrives that you'll be able to share this blog with him.

I can't wait (okay, yes I can) to do the same with my child one day.

  8. Kim, what wonderful words. Pieces like this must be kept so he can read them when he is older. I know my "landscape" also changed when I had my children. Motherhood is a wonderful gift.

  10. your son is so lucky to have you -- you seem like such a wonderful mom. and i am glad you cherish him.

i hope you find a way to tell your husband how great he is. i am sure he knows how you feel, but i bet he will love to hear it from you. sometimes wine helps one become more expressive and less inhibitive, but maybe that is not the best advice. notes and cards are always nice too when one has trouble saying the words. :)

and thank you for your sweet comment on my blog. you are so great. :)

  16. I found your site through linking from other blogs. Good thoughts on this post, and very biblical (I'm a minister). Happiness is often found not in the pursuit of what we don't have, but in the appreciation of what we do. Think of the simplicity of daily appreciation and gratitude, "Give us this day our daily bread ... and thank you." Now we are free to enjoy the people that mean the most to us. Good post.
