Deaglan v Parents 2009

Tonite after Deaglan ate pizza again for the ninth night in a row (I've tried to change it up but he chants PEEEE-ZUP! PEEEE-ZUP! while banging on the oven to remind me every night that I can pretty much forget putting anything else in front of him), I caught Shaune smiling to himself watching the kid streak through the living room in just a diaper chasing after the poor cat.

"Deaglan can I please have a kiss?" he asks.

"NNNNOOOO!" is the reply as the streaker runs the other way.

It suddenly dawned on me, the necessity of having more than one child. This voracious need to constantly shower your child with expressions of love and affection - could this be better appreciated by said child if it were delivered in timely increments? And as the parent, the only way I could even imagine practicing such restraint would be if there was another equally beautiful, breathtaking little wonder who could as easily melt my heart.

Please don't get excited - no big announcements here. But I have considered that if we don't want Deaglan to file for emancipation due to over-smothering as soon as he learns to read and write (and just think, Shaune and I are the everyday smotherers, there also grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends that show absolutely no restraint when visiting) we had better consider a second child sometime in the not-too-distant future.

  1. Deaglan is one lucky boy with so much love heading in his direction:) He'll have tons of self-esteem. He also will know by your example what it means to be a loving, attentive parent. You and Shaune are giving him an amazing gift by showing so much affection to him. Enjoy these sweet moments while they are here. Kids grow up so fast. Before you know it, bigger kids are looking at you like "Mom, please..." whenever you want a hug or a kiss. By the way, Jillian is driving my husband crazy lately because she likes to play the diva in the morning and refuse to give him a goodbye kiss. She gets in this kick when she acts like a queen and dispenses her affection when "she's in the mood".

  2. Sometimes it's hard not to just gobble them up.

  3. Kim-I feel the same way about pizza. Pullleeeze! and I thought one horse would be lonely. Now have five that eat and do nothing. Just sayin. ~rick

  4. Can I come to your house for dinner? Please?

I know - I feel the same way...but I've always (since having F) known I want another. I just have so much love to give, and F loves being around other kids so much - it makes sense!

  5. MMMMM... pizza. I don't blame Deaglan one bit. If I had my choice, I might have it several nights in a row, too. :)

And I think Deaglan is very lucky to have all of that love and attention showered upon him each day. It sounds like you and Shaune are wonderful parents. Another child would be a blessing for you guys - it definitely sounds like you have enough love to go around.

  6. Well, I, for one, cannot WAIT for the big announcement!

And I think Deaglan and I might be related. I could eat pizza for every meal!

  7. We have definitely considered this high up on the list when we found out we were pregnant again.. and remind ourselves daily. Especially when he does something incredibly cute or demanding (or both) and we both RUSH to fix whatever it is he wants. Yep! Need #2 now!

  8. My grandson has a penchant for orange food. He wants, CheezIts, mac n' cheese, chicken nuggets, slices of cheese, Cheeetos, well...you get the picture. It's a fixation, but then he's only two. I had five kids and I have to tell you, it's impossible not to grab them at every chance when they're small to suck on their little faces, doesn't matter how many of them are around. Love Deaglan up, he'll thank you later. :-)

  9. It is exciting to make THAT big decision. How great would it be to add to your family?! You both have so much love...another child would be so lucky to have you too! Have fun getting pregnant!

  10. He replaced his mom's milk with pizza!

I cannot wait for Deaglan to be a big brother. It sounds like he gets so much love and there is always plenty of lovin' to go around!

    Be well!

P.S. I took T Rex to see his cousin last week (my sister's son) and she was there and she thanked me for the visit. It's a start. Little ones have a way of beginning the healing process.

  11. I love that you are pondering having another based on the enormous amount of love you feel and want to share. That's as a good parent should be.

  12. I am a smother-lover too. Poor Noah...He will be seven soon and has had to put up with me. Oh well, maybe soon he will get a break. By the way, you and Shaune are so great I think the world would do well with another one of your creations. :)
