My facebook friends

I was a facebook snob. I said things like I refuse to get a facebook account! And if I heard of someone else boycotting facebook, I raised a fist in solidarity and said good for you!

I can admit when I'm wrong.

Because let's face it, it's pretty fun. Stay-in-your-pyjamas-all-day-because-your-baby doesn't-sleep-but-still-have-contact-with-the-outside-world-kind of fun.

You may find yourself connecting with gals from high school, finding all new reasons to be friends. Tracy, Tina and I are all moms to boys. They read my blog and leave wistful comments like wish we had blogging technology when our boys were babies. Their sons are teenagers. Through them I can get a glimpse of my future. A positive glimpse - not the the loony-getting-carried-away-with-worry kind of images my mind is capable of. At 18 and 15, Tracy's boys still give her hugs and kisses before bed. Tina's boys are the same ages and she says she gets compliments all the time from teachers, neighbours and friends that her kids are polite and caring. Here's a picture of Tina's boys.

You get to see little monkies like this one (Tracy's nephew) win cute baby contests...you're not surprised he won are you?

And you get to marvel that you are reunited with your friends from Tucson. Especially when at the end of grade eight you were certain your world had ended because your family moved back to Sarnia, Ontario. You corresponded through letters but eventually lost touch. Letters!!
And through facebook you can't believe it but you slip into an easiness with each other as if 25 years hadn't passed since you last spoke!

It's good. Facebook.

Because while reading Robert Munsch's Down the Drain to your three-year old you might find yourself smoothing his hair back from his forehead.

And he might say what are you doing Mommy?

And you might say something like smoothing your hair honey - do you like it?

And without hesitation he might say no stop it.

Times like that it's nice to know you have some friends on facebook!

I want to post your pictures to my blog once a week! Tag me or post your shots to my wall and I'll include them. Only post pictures that belong to you please.

  1. Originally I got a facebook account to keep in touch with family all over the world..and it has snowballed from family to grade school and high school friends. What I've noticed over the past 3 years on facebook is that the people I considered "friends" in high school are not the ones I communicate with most often. It's people that were classmates and ones I didn't recognize as friends that I communicate with most. Makes me wonder why I made the choices I did way back then..things that make you hmmmm.
Just wait...now that the kids are older I actually get asked to play with their hair (Josh) or rub their feet (Jamie...not a chance buddy those are adult feet now). As the go from baby to toddler it's a lot about independence and as they become teens and young adults I think a little bit of them wants to be babied again. I know it doesn't soothe the hurt of being rejected now but you can basque in that later.

  2. I love Facebook. I originally got a Facebook because my daughter wanted one, and I wanted to send the "Mommy is always watching you" message, but then it just kind of spiraled. I have had get-togethers with friends from high school that I haven't talked to in years, got back in touch with people I probably never would have seen again otherwise, and have made some wonderful new friends.

As a teacher, I know that there is a dark side to Facebook, but as a person, it has unquestionably enriched my life :-)

  3. OMG! Tracy, you took the words right out of my head! I've been wanting to voice that thought for weeks! Funny how we perceive things, as 16 year olds. I admired you both for different reasons in high school, but for some reason we didn't hang out. It amazes and shocks me to read your posts Kim, and hear that you had all of these insecurities in high school. I always looked at you and thought you were soooo beautiful and popular and smart and had it all going on. Sometimes I think it would be nice to get a 'do over'. I'd certainly change some of those teenage choices I made back in high school. Since we can't go back, I'll just have to be happy with the fact that we re-connected as adults, at a time in our lives that we can appreciate people for who they are, and know that everyone, no matter how all together they seem to have it, have their issues. Thanks for giving us an opportunity to re-connect Kim! xoxo

  6. I resisted FB, too, but now love catching up with people. I keep my FB and blog worlds very separate, though.

(I have to read the comments in this box, before they are converted to cursive writing!)

  7. I also didn't expect to feel so connected with my FB friends. It has been a wonderful way to get to know each other in often real and concrete ways. I'm glad that I have you there too!!
