The Walker

I hope Naveen never finds out that we were actually expecting him to start walking at ten months. I will likely only tell him how thrilled we were when at 13 months he was FINALLY taking several steps. I mean it's not his fault he's the second child. He can't be blamed that someone else set the bar for his development.

Poor kid.

I definitely won't mention that on many occassions his parents looked at each other with raised eyebrows, worriedly wondering if there was a problem. Maybe by the time this gets out, he'll be a six foot two, ex-model, doctor, missionary, married with three children and a New York Times Bestseller.  Maybe in his acceptance speech for the Pulitzer he'll forgive Shaune and me for becoming typical parents, who forgot for a moment that every kid is different and will reach milestones at his own pace. Maybe he'll see that we tried to overcompensate for this by telling him he was our favourite when his brother was busy throwing tantrums.

Naveen is finally walking. And we are over the moon. Sorry for the terrible camera-work. I had to be like a paparazzi, ready to film at any given moment. I took 12 videos of him taking one or two steps until finally he dazzled me with this.

  1. Congrats on your little walker!

My son didn't walk until 13 months either and even though we didn't have an older sibling to compare him to, my husband and I gave each other the raised eyebrows all the time!

  2. It's funny - my one boy that started crawling at not even 6 months didn't bother walking until 16 months! He was just too fast at crawling, so he didn't bother.

  4. Isn't it funny how we pray for them to "walk" and about 0.5 secs after they do we wonder how to keep them from getting into everything lol

  5. Congrats to Naveen!

And all kids are different. I was expecting T to start walking around 9 months, since that's when both his dad & I started walking. But he was a preemie, so we had to put him on a different calendar. He started walking at 12 months & I couldn't have been more proud. :)

  6. Go Naveen! You crack me up!
Only cool parents would think to lay a soundtrack on the video of their child's first steps.

  7. He is such a cutie! I suspect that he will forgive you even if he figures it out!

  8. Yay for Naveen. And it won't matter if you tell him some day that you just assumed he'd walk on the same schedule as his brother. My first son walked early and the second waited until he was 14 months. But so what? As long as they eventually walk, all's good.

  9. So cute!! And I love that you always put "real" songs for the background music. No Wheels On The Bus or Wiggles garbage here!!

  10. so I'm thinking that unless he's way ahead of the curve on the reading schedule – you probably don't have to worry about him knowing for a little while at least. I remember the first pictures I saw of him – and how much he's changed – time flies. God bless and keep you and each and every one of yours Kim!

  11. I only have one child and still fall into that trap about worrying over every milestone. We all need the reminder that they'll get there when they get there. Congrats little man!

  12. Whoo Hoo, yay Naveen!! ;) I love his little wobble-walk. By the way, you would have went bonkers waiting for my guy...almost 19 months when he took off. LOL

  13. T Rex walked at 10 months and 2 days old. It was no fun - lots of bruises, bumps, and a broken nose. Our daughter was just about a year old. I think the longer they wait within the normal range, the better. It gives time for the brain to be prepared for what the body wants to do.

He is just too cute, Kim.

  15. So cute! That's terrific :)

John didn't walk until 15 months and he was my oldest. All the other ones walked around 12 or 13 months.
